Niet het bestaan van de software zelf natuurlijk, maar wel de geforceerde manier waarop Nederlandstalige termen en begrippen de gebruiker worden opgedrongen, terwijl het nut en de noodzaak hiervan niet helemaal duidelijk zijn. Engels is immers de <em>lingua franca<\/em> van de IT-wereld en zelfs gebruikers zonder talenknobbel weten nog wel wat woorden als \u2018options\u2019, \u2018image\u2019 en \u2018insert\u2019 betekenen.<\/p>\n<p>De argumenten en ergernissen van de auteur zijn herkenbaar. Zo vind ik zelf de Nederlandse taal in software voornamelijk storend wanneer er zich problemen voordoen. Meestal is het antwoord gemakkelijk te vinden op een Engelstalige website, maar specifieke opties en knoppen waarvan je de locatie niet precies weet zijn moeilijk terug te vinden wanneer ze verscholen staan achter een Nederlandse term.<\/p>\n<p>Veel van de klanten waar we voor werken houden zich bezig met het ontwikkelen en implementeren van IT-producten en -oplossingen. Uiteraard willen zij dit kenbaar maken door via ons persberichten, media alerts, whitepapers en andere teksten de wereld in te sturen. Deze teksten worden door ons vanuit het Engels vertaald en hebben vaak een hoog technisch gehalte. Bij uitstek komt hierbij de bovenstaande vertaalkwestie naar voren: welke Engelstalige woorden en termen zet je om naar het Nederlands? Hoe consequent moet je hierin zijn? En welke voorkennis mag je bij de lezer veronderstellen?<\/p>\n<p>Behoud je bij de vertaalslag bijvoorbeeld de term \u2018management\u2019 of vervang je deze met \u2018beheer\u2019? Is het \u2018storage\u2019 of \u2018opslag\u2019? \u2018Recovery\u2019 of \u2018herstel\u2019? En behoud je de werkwoordsvorm bij de term \u2018licensing\u2019 (waardoor het \u2018licenti\u00ebren\u2019 zou worden) of hou je er rekening mee dat dit (nog) geen bestaand werkwoord in het Nederlands is (en \u2018licentieverlening\u2019 een mogelijke vertaling is)? En wat te denken van termen als \u2018granular\u2019 en \u2018compliance\u2019, die vaak wel vertaald moeten worden terwijl dit de lopende tekst niet ten goede komt?<\/p>\n<p>Hier komt bij uitstek een grote hoeveelheid maatwerk om de hoek kijken, die je alleen met kennis van zowel de klant, het product als de doelgroep kunt inzetten. Door vooraf te bepalen welke boodschap je met de tekst wilt overbrengen en wie je lezerspubliek is, kom je al een heel eind met een correcte vertaling.
